Red Bank’s dining scene continues to evolve, and the recent opening of Semolina has certainly created a buzz. Following a visit to this new establishment, nestled in the space formerly occupied by Dish, this review delves into the experience, focusing on the cuisine, ambiance, and overall impression of Semolina Red Bank.
Before heading to Semolina, the evening began with pre-dinner drinks at 26 West, another notable spot in Red Bank. Located just a short distance from Semolina, 26 West offers a sophisticated setting with a bar area at the entrance and a more expansive bar towards the back. The rear bar boasts views of the dining room and large windows overlooking the scenic Navesink River. The ambiance is undeniably attractive, and the anticipation of a rooftop space currently under construction adds to the allure.
Initially at 26 West, service proved to be a bit slow. Despite several bartenders behind the bar, attention was not immediate. However, a turning point came with a bartender’s excellent drink recommendation. Opting for something similar to an Old Fashioned, the suggested Vieux Carre, a New Orleans classic, was a delightful discovery. This expertly crafted cocktail certainly compensated for the initial wait and set a positive tone for the evening.
Moving on to the main event, Semolina Red Bank immediately impressed with its vibrant atmosphere. It was evident from the moment of arrival that Semolina was a popular destination, bustling with diners even late into the evening. The restaurant was completely full, and while the energy was palpable, it’s worth noting that the noise level was quite high. While this contributed to a lively atmosphere, it’s something to be aware of for those seeking a quieter dining experience. Hopefully, Semolina will consider sound mitigation strategies to enhance the overall comfort of the dining space.
Despite being only in its first week of operation at the time of visit, the service at Semolina was generally smooth and welcoming. Any minor initial hiccups were easily overshadowed by the exceptional warmth and attentiveness of our server, Shane. Learning that Shane is married to the Chef/Owner added a personal touch to the experience, and his passion for the food and the restaurant was evident.
The culinary offerings at Semolina Red Bank proved to be the highlight of the evening. Starting with appetizers, the Burrata with peaches and tomatoes was a fresh and flavorful combination, elevated by a high-quality balsamic served on the side. The clams, served in a fragrant white wine and garlic broth, were simply outstanding. The broth itself was incredibly flavorful and perfect for dipping with crusty bread.
For the main courses, pasta dishes took center stage. The pea agnolotti was a standout, particularly for mint lovers. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the mint-infused filling was bright and refreshing. It was mentioned that this dish, featuring seasonal Jersey corn, would soon be replaced, making it a must-try while still available. The crab and pasta dish, customized without bacon, was equally impressive, showcasing fresh crab and expertly prepared pasta.
To conclude the meal, the peach galette, recommended by Shane, was an excellent choice. The pastry was perfectly flaky and buttery, and the filling was just sweet enough, avoiding any cloying sweetness. It was a delightful and satisfying end to an exceptional meal at Semolina Red Bank.
In conclusion, Semolina Red Bank is a very promising addition to the Red Bank dining scene. While the noise level could be a consideration for some, the outstanding food, warm service, and inviting atmosphere make it a restaurant with significant potential. Semolina Red Bank is definitely worth a visit and has the makings of a true culinary hit in Red Bank.
