University experiences extend far beyond the classroom, shaping individuals in profound ways. In a testament to this, a group of passionate Texas State University alumni have transformed a simple idea into a significant annual tradition, all while giving back to their alma mater’s athletic programs. What began in 2023 as a fun initiative to support Texas State Athletics and the Bobcat Club has evolved into a major homecoming reunion weekend. Each year, over 200 alumni from the late 80s and early 90s gather for a spirited tailgate, capped off by a Harley ride leading the cheerleaders and football team across UFCU Stadium.
The 2024 “80’s-90’s All-Greek 2024 Homecoming Tailgate” marked a pivotal moment. Alumni were invited to contribute to cover event costs, initially without a formal donation plan in place. However, the overwhelming success of the event led to a meaningful outcome. The funds raised were strategically directed to the Maroon & Gold Collective, an organization founded by fellow alumni Thaddeus “Big Thad” Watkins and Justin Shaffer. This collective plays a crucial role in fundraising and managing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) arrangements, directly benefiting Bobcat student-athletes and their success.
This remarkable alumni-led initiative is expertly coordinated by Frank Friesenhahn, Jeff Truscott, and Fritz Cox, with invaluable support from DJ Anderson, Jason Cragg, Steve Ison, and numerous other dedicated classmates. Recently, Fritz Cox and a fellow organizer had the pleasure of visiting with “Big Thad” Watkins and Gil Hodges, a representative from First Lockhart National Bank, to present their generous 2024 donation. First Lockhart National Bank serves as the bank for the Maroon & Gold Collective, highlighting the local financial institution’s commitment to supporting community initiatives and the development of young athletes. This contribution signifies just the beginning of ongoing support from this alumni group.
Prior to the donation presentation, organizers engaged in productive meetings on the Texas State University campus. Discussions with Todd Jensen, CFRE, from University Advancement, and Dr. Sidney “Skip” Anderson from the McCoy College of Business at Texas State University centered around future strategies for enhanced alumni engagement and enriching student experiences in the burgeoning AI era. This forward-thinking approach underscores the dynamic and evolving relationship between Texas State University and its alumni network. It’s clear that there’s never been a more exciting time to be a Bobcat, with alumni like these leading the charge. Eat’em Up, Cats! Go Cats Go!
